Young children respond particularly well to the flu vaccine, and giving it to preschoolers creates a ripple effect that diminishes the flu in the population as a whole.

Even though preschoolers are just a fraction of the population, immunizing a critical percentage of the population from the flu could significantly diminish the chance of a widespread outbreak, a phenomenon known as herd immunity."This is just part of being a good citizen and not hurting your neighbor," says Jon C. "It’s good for your neighbor’s kids and it’s good for grandma."Jane Zucker, an assistant commissioner at New York City's Department of Health, says herd immunity "absolutely" shaped her department's new policy, which mirrors similar rules that have been followed in Connecticut and New Jersey followed for years."There’s a good evidence base about the importance of vaccinating young children on community transmission, and [herd immunity] was really a strong influence on the decision to move forward," she says.

But mandatory influenza vaccination hasn't caught on as fast, even though vaccination for young children is strongly recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Seasonal flu is not only unpleasant for employers and employees, it's expensive.

Each flu season, nearly 111 million workdays are lost because of the flu, the US Department of Health & Human Services has found.

It’s sole purpose was to protect the children of California, the country’s most populous and wealthiest state, from ravages of diseases that were once on the verge of extinction.

Despite the overwhelming support from the legislature and citizens of the state, some groups remain steadfastly opposed.

In 2009, concerns about a swine flu pandemic convinced some employers to consider requiring employees to be vaccinated.

Now that we are in the midst of another flu epidemic, some employers are once again weighing the costs and benefits of a mandatory flu shot policy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people infected with the flu may infect others both before and after experiencing symptoms.

Others infected with the flu virus may never experience symptoms and unknowingly spread it to others. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that about two-thirds of health care professionals now get vaccinated.

During the last flu season, a hospital in northern Indiana fired eight workers who refused to get vaccines against the seasonal disease.
